Get Ready to Rake: Akron's Leaf Pickup Dates You Need to Know

well, it's that time of year.

It's beautiful outside right now, but we know within the span of about a week, those leaves are going to fall down, and we're going to be up to our kneecaps in that.

So here are our two favorite AI Anchors to talk about the leaf removal schedule.

Akron fall is in full swing, and you know what that means.

Leaves everywhere.

And if you're an Akronite, you know that leaf pickup season can be.

Well, let's just say it can be a bit tricky.

It is.

It really can be.

When, where, how?

Like, what's the deal with my ward and all that?

Very valid questions.

It's a little more complicated than just raking them to the curb, right?

Exactly.

But that's why we're here, to break it all down, make it simple.

Make sure you're all set for a smooth leaf pickup season.

No stress, no fines, just clean streets.

I like the sound of that.

All right, so first things first.

Wards.

Oh, yes, wards.

Ten of them in Akron.

And they each have different leaf pickup dates.

Exactly.

And knowing your ward is.

Well, it's kind of like step one.

Right.

Gotta know where to start.

It is.

Absolutely.

So how do we figure that out?

Easiest way.

Akron city council website.

They have a handy dandy map.

Oh, yeah.

Super easy to use.

Just plug in your address, and boom, you know your ward.

Magic.

Well, not really magic, but it feels.

That way, kind of.

Right.

All right, so once you know your ward, then what?

Then, my friend, it's all about those dates.

Gotta know when they're coming for those leaves.

Yeah, because we're talking, like, early November to mid December.

A whole range.

Yep.

And each ward's different.

So once you find your ward, jot down that date big and bold on your calendar.

Seriously, don't wait.

You don't want to miss it.

Not at all.

Once you miss it, you're kind of stuck.

Now, once you know your date, it's all about playing by the rules.

And honestly, they're pretty simple.

Mostly common sense stuff.

Totally agree.

Makes things easier for everyone, especially the folks who actually have to collect all those leaves.

Big shout out to them.

Seriously, those crews work hard.

Okay, so rule number one leaves out the day before your pickup.

Yep.

But here's the catch.

No more than two feet from the curb.

You'd be surprised how many folks messed that One up.

Yeah, my neighbor learned that the hard way last year.

Another thing to consider.

The city also asked that all vehicles are removed from the street while crews are clearing the leaves.

That has to do.

You know they've got those big vacuums around.

They need them out of the way.

Okay, rule number two, only leaves.

We talking leaves only in those piles?

Seriously?

No branches, no sticks, no yard waste.

Leaves only.

It's all about those vacuums again.

Stuff other than leaves can really mess them up.

Yeah, and then the whole process gets delayed.

Nobody wants that.

Okay, PSA for all parents out there.

This one's for you kids.

Loof piles.

Not a good combo.

Especially near the street.

Tempting, I know, but not safe.

Those trucks are big.

You don't want to risk it.

Yeah, just common sense.

Plus you never know what's hiding in those leaves.

Could be a rogue rake or worse.

Okay, next up.

This one surprised me.

Don't bag those leaves unless you've called.

311 and arranged it.

Right?

Exactly.

They've got a separate system for bagged leaves.

Just let em loose on the curb.

Makes sense.

Different trucks, different schedules for the bagged stuff.

Exactly.

Now once those leaves are gone, fight the urge.

Don't rake out more leaves.

I know it's tempting, but seriously, resist.

It can actually get you fined.

Yeah, after your pickup date.

That's it.

It messes up the whole schedule if people keep putting leaves out.

And last but not least, this one's a biggie for everyone, not just you parents.

No parking on leaf piles.

Seriously?

It's tempting sometimes, especially when street parking is tight.

It is.

But don't do it.

Can mess up your car, can mess up the pickup process.

It's all about keeping things clear for those trucks.

Let them do their thing.

Exactly.

So yeah, it's really not that hard, right?

Just follow the rules, be mindful of your neighbors and the city crews and we'll all have a stress free leaf pickup season.
