Sales Tax Vacation

Ohio's sales tax holiday is coming. And that means summer is coming to a close and kids will soon be going back to school. The state's tax-free weekend for school supplies will be from Aug. 5 to Aug. 7 this year. The sales tax rates across northern Ohio range from 6.75% to a high of 8% in Cuyahoga County. The tax break will be for school supplies and some clothing purchases.

Here are the basic rules of what will be exempt from sales tax: An item of clothing priced at $75 or less. An item of school supplies priced at $20 or less. An item of school instructional material priced at $20 or less. The Ohio Department of Taxation notes that items that are typically used for trade or a business are not exempt.

The state has a wide definition of what it considers to be clothing eligible for the tax break, and some of the items — like a wedding dress as long as it is under the $75 threshold — might surprise you.

Free Back to School Haircuts

Bell's Barber Shop is offering free back-to-school haircuts for students at its Stow location. Justin Bell, owner, said business at his barbershop has been going well and he wants to give back to the community. "With inflation and prices going up everywhere, we just want to help out," he said.

Haircuts will be free by walk-in only for all students from kindergarteners to high school seniors from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 15 through Aug. 19 and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 20.

Derby Senior Day

August 11

Seniors are invited to race down the world famous Derby Downs Track in adult Soap Box Derby cars. About this event Additionally, guests will have the opportunity to explore the Aging on Track Senior Expo in the Soap Box Derby Hall of Fame and Museum Building. There will be live entertainment and a catered boxed lunch provided by City Barbeque.
