Phones Out, Hands Off: Akron Officer Attacked as Crowd Watches

An Akron police officer was punched and bitten on Copley Road while people around her pulled out their phones and laughed. I can't let that one go, and on this episode I explain why it should bother every one of us. I've also got the Akron officer caught snooping through the city's Flock camera network, a morning shootout on Brown Street, and some news that eCheck haters have been waiting decades to hear. Then we lighten up with Halloween events, trick-or-treat night, and a packed October concert calendar. Hit play. There's a lot going on in this town.

This episode:

  • Officer attacked while bystanders film. On September 28th, a female Akron officer answering a burglary-in-progress call in the 900 block of Copley Road was assaulted by a violent felon, and two others joined in. Nobody helped. I talk about why that's a problem for all of us, especially since the chief just told council that assaults on officers are up 76% this year (30 so far in 2026, compared with 17 in 2025).
  • The Flock camera investigation. A former officer on paid leave after a fatal shooting allegedly used Akron's Flock camera system for his own purposes. The city opened a criminal investigation and turned it over to the Summit County Sheriff's Office. Councilman Eric Garrett wants answers on how the 145 cameras are being used, the police oversight board wants the independent auditor to review the network, and a local petition is calling for the city to end the contract entirely.
  • eCheck could finally be on its way out. Governor DeWine has directed the Ohio EPA to start ending vehicle emissions testing in Northeast Ohio, now that the region meets federal ozone standards. There will be public comments in October and a public meeting in November, and the request should go to the U.S. EPA by year's end. It isn't gone yet, but it's closer than ever.
  • Officer-involved shooting on Brown Street. I play Lt. Michael Murphy's briefing on Wednesday morning's warrant operation, where a suspect fired and an Akron task force officer returned fire. BCI is handling the investigation.
  • Register to vote by October 5. I cover how to register online at voteohio.gov, by mail, or in person at the BMV, public libraries, the county board of elections, and more.
  • 20+ years for shooting at an Akron officer. A convicted drug trafficker was sentenced for a 2023 shooting near South Arlington Road. The searches turned up guns, meth, fentanyl, cash, and even a 3D printer.
  • Halloween in Akron. Trick-or-treat night is Saturday, October 31, from 5 to 7 p.m. I also run through safety tips and these events:
  • Boo at the Zoo
  • Downtown Akron Fall Fest (Oct. 17)
  • The Akron Art Museum's Thriller dance party (Oct. 30)
  • Boo on the Boulevard in Kenmore (Oct. 31)
  • Spooky films at the Akron Civic all month

David Jackson:

It's the Akron podcast for Friday, october 2.

David Jackson:

Our website is akronpodcast.com. This just sounds horrible, and

David Jackson:

it is kind of a mirror. But here's the thing: on the 28th,

David Jackson:

an officer, an Akron officer, responding to a burglary call,

David Jackson:

was assaulted in front of onlookers who did nothing to

David Jackson:

help. Are you kidding me? They said with a violent while a

David Jackson:

violent felon punched and bit an officer. Bystanders. What did

David Jackson:

they do? They pulled out their phones and they recorded it, and

David Jackson:

they laughed. That's amazing. Nobody stepped in to help her.

David Jackson:

It was a female officer. The incident happened at a small

David Jackson:

three-story brick apartment building in the 900 block of

David Jackson:

Copley Road while the officer was responding to a report of a

David Jackson:

burglary in process, so they're coming to help you because

David Jackson:

somebody is apparently broken into your house, and from what I

David Jackson:

understand, the person came out and then two other people joined

David Jackson:

in. It's just one of those things where, you know, an

David Jackson:

officer needs to know the city they serve stands behind them,

David Jackson:

and anyone thinking about attacking a police officer needs

David Jackson:

to know it too. And look, I know we've had all sorts of problems

David Jackson:

with the shooting death of Jalen Walker, but if we keep treating

David Jackson:

the police poorly, when we really need them and they don't

David Jackson:

show up, we're just giving them reasons to not show up. News of

David Jackson:

this attack also comes less than two weeks after the chief of

David Jackson:

police told city council that assaults on Akron officers have

David Jackson:

increased 76% up to 30 in 2026 compared to 17 in 2025, and

David Jackson:

attacks on our officers. It's just whether it's police or

David Jackson:

fire, we just can't tolerate that. We have to come together

David Jackson:

as a community, and when you see anybody, a policeman or not,

David Jackson:

getting out, you know, three people on one, somebody's got to

David Jackson:

put down their phone and start helping. It's just amazing. It's

David Jackson:

it. I don't. As I said, our police department is not 100%

David Jackson:

great, but they do try to make changes. For example, they are

David Jackson:

investigating former police officer Davon Fields, who

David Jackson:

accessed the flock camera. You know those things that are there

David Jackson:

to protect us. They say, well, he was on paid leave after the

David Jackson:

fatal shooting of Jasmir Tucker, and apparently was using the

David Jackson:

flock system to do his own little bit of research. And the

David Jackson:

city has now opened a criminal investigation and turned the

David Jackson:

case over to the Summit County Sheriff's Office. Now, what's

David Jackson:

interesting about this is there are 145 flock cameras again

David Jackson:

there to help keep us safe. They say, and everybody is like,

David Jackson:

"Hey, we should probably check out how this is working. So,

David Jackson:

at-large councilman Eric Garrick, Garrett, excuse me, has

David Jackson:

introduced a resolution asking the administration to explain

David Jackson:

how the system is being used for surveillance, the police

David Jackson:

oversight board is voted to have the independent police auditor

David Jackson:

review Akron's flock network. Residents have also raised

David Jackson:

concerns. The Akron chapter of the Democratic Socialists of

David Jackson:

America. Do we have one of those? Socialists of America is

David Jackson:

a weird phrase in my book. They're circulating a petition

David Jackson:

calling for the city to end its flock contract. Basically, in

David Jackson:

Columbus, two officers were suspended and paused for using

David Jackson:

the camera's, you know, information illegally. I guess

David Jackson:

you could say misuse of it in New York. A sheriff's

David Jackson:

investigator is accused of using the sister the system to monitor

David Jackson:

people, including his ex girlfriend. So again, Akron is

David Jackson:

investigating former officer David Fields for accessing the

David Jackson:

city's flock system while he was on administrative leave. Hey,

David Jackson:

let's get to some good news. If you hate the eCheck program,

David Jackson:

check this out. Governor Mike DeWine has directed the Ohio EPA

David Jackson:

to begin the process of ending vehicle emissions testing in the

David Jackson:

region. The state plans to submit its request to the U.S.

David Jackson:

EPA by the end of the year, following public comments in

David Jackson:

October and a public meeting in November. The change comes at.

David Jackson:

After the federal government redesignated Northeast Ohio as

David Jackson:

meeting federal ozone standards, an eCheck has been required in

David Jackson:

seven counties since 1996. The problem was originally created

David Jackson:

to reduce ozone pollution around Cleveland and Akron, and last

David Jackson:

year the U.S. EPA rejected an attempt by Ohio lawmakers to

David Jackson:

eliminate the testing requirement.

David Jackson:

Supporters of ending eCheck say the region has now met the air

David Jackson:

quality standards and that the program costs more than $12

David Jackson:

million a year. The proposal still needs approval from the

David Jackson:

U.S. EPA, so eCheck isn't gone yet. But the state is officially

David Jackson:

starting the process to end it, hooray! Well, we're going to get

David Jackson:

to some happy, fun news in a minute, but this is just in on

David Jackson:

october 1. There was a shooting on Brown Street, and here's a

David Jackson:

report from Lieutenant Michael Murphy explaining what happened

Unknown:

around 836 a.m. this morning. So this is a joint

Unknown:

operation between the U.S. Marshal Service, the Northern

Unknown:

Ohio Violent Vision Task Force, and Agro Peace Department

Unknown:

Anti-Violence Bureau, units were on scene serving an arrest

Unknown:

warrant for an individual who was warranted for violent

Unknown:

violent offenses. It has a history of violent offenses. As

Unknown:

our detectives entered into the residence and attempted to make

Unknown:

contact with them. We've learned that at least one shot was

Unknown:

discharged by the suspect. One of our officers returned fired,

Unknown:

striking the suspect. That individual has been transported

Unknown:

to the hospital. We're still in the very very early stages of

Unknown:

the investigation and trying to piece together everything with

Unknown:

multiple agencies and multiple different units being on scene

Unknown:

here, but that's kind of where we're at right now. We

Unknown:

anticipate to have additional information in the coming hour,

Unknown:

but we're investigating an officer-involved shooting. I can

Unknown:

confirm that the officer that is involved in the shooting is an

Unknown:

Akron police officer who's working as a task force officer

Unknown:

for the Violent Fugitive Task Force, this officer has been on

Unknown:

the department for eight years, and again, just in the very

Unknown:

early stages of working with our our partners to kind of come

Unknown:

through this. BCI has responded in their own team, so as a

Unknown:

standard protocol, we hand off the investigation to BCI and let

Unknown:

them conduct an independent third-party investigation, and

Unknown:

we'll turn over all of the evidence and the scene to them,

Unknown:

and they may have more information for you at a later

Unknown:

date.

David Jackson:

Hopefully, this doesn't mean that we end up

David Jackson:

paying the family, you know, $2 million in you know two years. I

David Jackson:

think this is more. We always say this every election. This is

David Jackson:

the most important election, but it is important. We can all

David Jackson:

complain about, you know, this person and that person. But the

David Jackson:

deadline to register to vote in November is october 5. That is

David Jackson:

right around the corner. So to register online, you can go to

David Jackson:

voteohio.gov to register by mail or print or fill out a voter

David Jackson:

registration form. That's you do that and then you mail it to the

David Jackson:

county board of elections. If you're going to do it by mail, I

David Jackson:

would do that right now. To register in person, you can

David Jackson:

visit the Ohio Secretary of State's office, any Ohio County

David Jackson:

Board of Elections office, any Bureau of Motor Vehicles

David Jackson:

register-that's an easy one-or Deputy Register Office, public

David Jackson:

libraries, high schools, vocation schools, or county

David Jackson:

treasurers, as well as designated agencies under the

David Jackson:

National Voter Registration Act. So, if you want to vote, get

David Jackson:

registered. That deadline again is october 5, and we just gave

David Jackson:

you a giant list of places, so it's easy to get registered, and

David Jackson:

it's also easy to vote. We've had a lot of news about police

David Jackson:

and things like that. I thought I'd throw this one in here: a

David Jackson:

convicted drug trafficker who shot an Akron police officer was

David Jackson:

sentenced to 20 to 25 and a half years in prison across three

David Jackson:

cases, according to a release from the Summit County

David Jackson:

Prosecutor Rodney Andrus or Andrews maybe Jr. He was 29,

David Jackson:

pleaded guilty to one count of having weapons while under

David Jackson:

disability, with a specification for forfeit of a weapon, I don't

David Jackson:

know what that means in English, but these charges stem from back

David Jackson:

in 2023 when an Akron police officer responded to the sound

David Jackson:

of gunshots near South Arlington Road. Shocking South Arlington,

David Jackson:

really? According to the release, the officer pursued a

David Jackson:

car with suspected perpetrators, and the vehicle occupants fired

David Jackson:

at the officer before fleeing. And police tracked down the car

David Jackson:

and the owner, and claimed that Andrews was renting it during

David Jackson:

the search. Officers said they found six guns, 316 grams of

David Jackson:

meth. This is inaccessible. Kids, 176 grams of fentanyl,

David Jackson:

$1,240 in cash, scales, baggies, a money counter, and a 3D

David Jackson:

printer. During another search of a different address, Andrew's

David Jackson:

home, officers found $2,230 in cash and multiple cell phones.

David Jackson:

And location data from Andrew's cell phone also placed him at

David Jackson:

the location of the 2023 shooting. So, if you're gonna,

David Jackson:

you know, it's kind of nice when some of the bad guys actually go

David Jackson:

to jail. All right, it is October, which means we're all

David Jackson:

gonna lose our minds about Halloween. And from the Akron,

David Jackson:

Ohio website, the city of Akron's annual trick or treat

David Jackson:

night will take place on Halloween. That's Saturday,

David Jackson:

October 31st, from 5 to 7 p.m. Akron residents who wish to

David Jackson:

participate are encouraged to turn on their porch or front

David Jackson:

lights during the trick or treat hours to let families know they

David Jackson:

are welcoming trick or treaters. Some Halloween safety tips:

David Jackson:

Children should be accompanied by a responsible adult, or

David Jackson:

travel in groups, or carry a gun. Kidding. Trick or treaters

David Jackson:

should use sidewalks whenever possible and cross streets and

David Jackson:

intersections. A lot of these sound very duh. Drivers should

David Jackson:

use extra caution to watch for children, particularly in

David Jackson:

residential neighborhoods, of course, costumes should be

David Jackson:

visible to drivers. Reflective tape, glow sticks, etc. Family

David Jackson:

should only visit homes with porch or front lights turned on.

David Jackson:

And here's another one: when you're like 17, yeah, and like

David Jackson:

I'm dressed up like a teenager, yeah, that's not really a

David Jackson:

costume. The Akron's boo at the zoo is october 10, 11th, 17th,

David Jackson:

18th, 24th, and 25th, from 11 a.m. to 7p.m. That is, of

David Jackson:

course, right off of Copley Road, which we talked about

David Jackson:

today. Downtown Akron Fall Fest is Saturday, october 17, from

David Jackson:

four to 7p.m. The Akron Art Museum's circa thriller dance

David Jackson:

party is Friday, october 30, from 730 to 11. Better Kenmore

David Jackson:

CDC's Boo on the Boulevard is Saturday, october 31, from one

David Jackson:

to 3p.m. So you could do a little candy there from one to

David Jackson:

three in Kenmore, and then get more candy later.

David Jackson:

And of course, there's going to be some spooky films all month

David Jackson:

long at the Akron Civic, and if you're looking for some non kind

David Jackson:

of Halloween stuff, we got lots of stuff coming up. If you go

David Jackson:

out to akronpodcast.com/events, you will see that on the third,

David Jackson:

that Saturday, Brad Williams, hilarious comedian, will be at

David Jackson:

the Northfield Racino. Then you have three nights at the Kent

David Jackson:

Stage with John Hyatt. That's an acoustic evening with him.

David Jackson:

Mickey Dowens from the Monkees will be doing 60 years of the

David Jackson:

Monkees. That's at the North Park Racino. I can always never

David Jackson:

say that. Vanilla Fudge on October 8 will be at the Kent

David Jackson:

Stage, Don was will be at the Kent Stage, october 15. Dmitri

David Jackson:

Martin will be at the Goodyear Theater. Joan Osborne will be at

David Jackson:

the Kent Stage. That's an acoustic one where she sings the

David Jackson:

songs of Bob Dylan. And then Blues Master Buddy Guy will be

David Jackson:

at the Northfield Racino singing the blues on october 18. For

David Jackson:

more information and more things coming up, like Captain Kirk.

David Jackson:

Yep, Captain Kirk is coming to Northfield. We've got the

David Jackson:

Outlaws. There are all sorts of new things. Brett Michaels is

David Jackson:

coming to town. Hanson is coming to town. Arrested Development is

David Jackson:

coming next year. Kenny Wayne Shepard is coming next year.

David Jackson:

Some really interesting things to put on your calendar.
